9 Graduation Photoshoot Mistakes You Don't Want To Make — And What To Do Instead

Whether you’re graduating from high school, college, grad school (or any grade for that matter), your grad photos are more than just pictures — they’re a celebration of your hard work and a keepsake of this incredible milestone. But let’s face it, planning a graduation photoshoot can feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to overlook details that could make or break your session. With years of experience under my belt as a Los Angeles graduation photographer, I’m sharing the biggest mistakes I’ve seen and tips on how to avoid them.

9 Graduation Photoshoot Mistakes To Avoid

Your graduation photos should reflect your personality, style, and achievements. There are a few key to-dos and not-to-dos that’ll impact how smoothly your session goes. Keep reading for my best tips and senior pictures ideas for an unforgettable graduation photoshoot in Los Angeles.

1. Booking Too Late

One of the biggest mistakes graduates make is waiting too long to book their photoshoot. Graduation season is a busy time for photographers, and their schedules fill up quickly. If you wait until the last minute, you might find yourself scrambling to find someone available — or worse, settling for a photographer whose style doesn’t match your vision.

Booking late can also limit your options for ideal times and locations, especially if you’re hoping for a specific backdrop or lighting condition. Early planning also gives you time to prepare outfits, props, and poses without feeling rushed.

What to do instead:

  • Book your session a couple of months in advance, if possible. (But also keep in mind that you can still get amazing pictures that commemorate your accomplishments after you actually graduate. You just might not have them in time for graduation announcement cards.)

  • Plan for a time when you’re not overwhelmed with exams or other commitments.

  • Reach out early to discuss your vision and secure your spot.

2. Not Thinking About Location

The backdrop of your photos is a super important detail. Choosing a location that doesn’t align with your personality or the mood you want can make your photos feel generic or disconnected. For example, a busy or cluttered background can distract from the main focus — you!

On the other hand, a meaningful or visually stunning location can elevate your photos and make them truly special. For most of my clients, their school campus is the perfect choice. The right location, such as your campus, can set the tone for your session, whether you’re going for classic, playful, or dramatic vibes.

What to do instead:

  • Choose a location that holds personal meaning, like your school campus or a favorite park or beach.

  • Consider the time of day for optimal lighting — golden hour is always a favorite!

  • Discuss location ideas with your photographer to find the perfect spot.

3. Forgetting Props

Graduation photo props can add a fun, personal touch to your photos, but forgetting them means missing out on creative opportunities to showcase your personality and achievements. Without props, your photos might lack the unique details that make them stand out and feel like you

Props like your diploma, cap, or tassel can highlight your academic accomplishments, while items related to your hobbies or major can add a personal flair. Even celebratory props like confetti or balloons can bring energy and excitement to your session.

What to do instead:

  • Bring meaningful props like your diploma, cap, tassel, or class ring.

  • Incorporate items that reflect your major or hobbies, like a stethoscope for nursing grads or a paintbrush for art majors.

  • Don’t forget celebratory props like confetti, balloons, or champagne for a festive vibe.

4. Trying a New Hairstyle

Graduation day is not the time to experiment with a bold new haircut or color. While it might seem like a fun way to mark the occasion, a drastic change might not be the look you want to freeze in time for yourself, your friends, and your family for years to come.

Even if the new style looks great, it might not feel like you, which can make your photos feel less authentic. Remember, your graduation photos are meant to capture who you are at this milestone moment.

What to do instead:

  • Stick with a hairstyle you know and love.

  • Schedule a trim or touch-up a week before your session for a polished look.

  • Practice styling your hair beforehand to make sure you like how it looks in photos.

5. Choosing Outfits That Don’t Feel Like You

Your outfit plays a huge role in how you feel during your session. You’ll want to make sure you don't wear anything uncomfortable or out of character. For example, choosing overly trendy pieces could look dated in a few years and not necessarily fit your style.

Graduation photos are a keepsake, so it’s important to choose clothing that reflects your personality and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. The right outfit can enhance your natural beauty and help you feel at ease in front of the camera.

What to do instead:

  • Pick outfits that reflect your personal style while complementing your cap and gown.

  • Avoid busy patterns or logos that can distract from your face and the intricate details of your tassel, master's hood, stole, and any honor cords or medallions.

  • Bring a second outfit for variety and peace of mind.

6. Overlooking Grooming Details

Small details like chipped nails, wrinkled clothes, or dry skin might seem minor, but they can stand out in high-resolution photos. Neglecting these details can make your photos look less polished and take away from the overall impact.

For example, wrinkled clothing can appear sloppy, while dry or chapped lips can be distracting in close-up shots. Trust me, you’ll be glad you took the time to address these details!

What to do instead:

  • Schedule a manicure or clean up your nails before the shoot.

  • Steam or iron your outfit to ensure it looks crisp.

  • Use an exfoliating cleanser and moisturizer the night before, and a gentle cleanser and moisturizer the morning of.

7. Not Practicing Poses

Feeling awkward in front of the camera is totally normal, so you might want to try out a few ideas ahead of time. Practicing poses ahead of time can help you feel more comfortable and confident during your session. It also gives you a chance to figure out which angles and expressions work best for you. But don’t worry too much — if you choose an experienced photographer, they can help you get those natural, candid photos everyone loves!

What to do instead:

  • Practice a few poses in front of a mirror to see what feels natural.

  • Work with a photographer who can guide you through flattering poses.

  • Focus on your posture — stand tall, relax your shoulders, and let your confidence shine.

8. Skipping Professional Help

While it’s tempting to save money by having a friend take your photos, you might end up with images that don’t meet your expectations. Professional photographers have the experience, equipment, and artistic eye to capture your best angles and create stunning compositions (and often a degree to back it up!). They also know how to handle different lighting conditions and guide you through poses to make sure your photos look polished and professional.

At Celeste Drake Photography, my graduation photography packages are designed to make your session stress-free and unforgettable. From helping you choose the perfect location to guiding you through every pose, I’ll ensure your photos reflect your unique personality and this incredible milestone.

What to do instead:

  • Invest in a professional photographer with experience taking grad photos.

  • Look at their portfolio to make sure their style matches your vision.

  • Trust their expertise to capture your best angles and moments.

9. Forgetting To Have Fun

The biggest mistake of all? Taking your graduation photoshoot too seriously. Stressing over every little detail can make the experience feel more like a chore than a celebration. Remember, your graduation photos are meant to capture your joy and pride, so it’s important to relax and enjoy the moment. When you’re having fun, it shows in your photos, making them more authentic and memorable.

What to do instead:

  • Relax and enjoy the moment — this is your time to shine. You’ve earned it!

  • Bring a friend or family member for moral support and extra laughs.

  • Trust your photographer to handle the details so you can focus on having fun.
